Panamint Manse shares rapturous homemade synthpop, moments of nourishing intimacy and a Castles In Space exclusive on this mixtape for Concrete Islands

We’ve set up a rudimentary antenna to make contact with a specific source located somewhere within the Mojave Desert. After sifting through the near-but-distant strains of UFO celebrants, sentient static and confused country music, the desired signal locks in. The task is only half-complete however, for the purpose is to transmit this signal to you, the faithful listener.

Dials turned, switches flicked and Concrete Islands is ready to transmit Panamint Manse straight into your heads and homes. Strap in.

Liner notes by Panamint Manse:

This mix explores themes of detachment reconciling the tenderness of reaching out.

I began putting it together prior to being asked to submit something for the site, with the idea that I might share it a month or two ahead of my next Bandcamp release. Most of the songs are pulled from my record collection and assembled in Live 10 with a few bits of field recordings or samples sprinkled in. A pretty good illustration of my general sensibility.

You might notice a push/pull between lonely and celebratory moments – occasionally landing somewhere between. Opening with “Heal”, a theme from the PS2 classic ICO that plays whenever you sit down with Yorda to save, is a statement of intent. In the midst of an extremely desolate piece of interactive fiction, some nourishing intimacy. Elsewhere you’ll find rapturous homemade synthpop aside more opaque reflections, and even a few unreleased tracks.

The Heartwood Manse selection from myself and Jonathan Sharp (The Heartwood Institute) appears courtesy of Castles In Space, who are set to release our debut LP Parapsychedelia in the near future. The Panamint Manse track was one of the first songs I ever finished, but was left off of my first release. I include it here as a nod to the theme of the mix: finding sweetness in the simple act of signalling from the void…

Tracklist:

A warning to the curious: the Bridging Isolation tracklist follows, but it may be advisable to leave and return after you’ve listened to the mixtape. Look away now!
