Scandinavian jazz bassist Petter Eldh’s Koma Sax ensemble commit an act of magic with a miraculous stew of future jazz avant-garde beats

If Koma Saxo is the sound of the now and then of the west coast of Sweden, then that is a place of wonder indeed. It’s as if the borders of Álfheimr were opened some years ago, allowing jazz to wind its way through to that twilight world – these are the answering sounds, as light and illusory as they are rooted in the mountains and valleys of ancient tales. Imagine György Ligeti working alongside Edda Dell’Orso (with notes from Neil Gaiman) on a future jazz album for Mo’ Wax in an alternate 2022 where the erstwhile label is still going strong. Because these pieces are seriously inventive avant-garde beat-head jams that breeze out of the speakers like the words of shared mythology rolling off the page.

Swedish bassist Petter Eldh has assembled a fine ensemble in Koma Sax and with the addition of vocalist Sofia Jernberg there’s something truly special occurring. There must have been magic in the air during these sessions as this is a miraculous album of out there new jazz that should be equally at home in forward-thinking club spaces and conservatoires.
