Sex Judas feat Ricky’s Flaming Creatures EP delivers an alluring set of oozing, sensually charged outsider disco cuts for open dancefloors everywhere

The latest digital-only release from the Optimo Music stable follows hot on the heels of Frank Rodas’s The Sellout and yet couldn’t be more different. Sex Judas feat Ricky is the in-heat incarnation of Tore Gjedrem from Norwegian duo Ost & Kjex and Flaming Creatures boasts three cuts of oozing, sensually charged cosmic disco. That the cover art looks like some imaginary Jake and Dinos Chapman piece from the pages of the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal magazine only makes the package all the more disturbingly alluring.

“Flaming Creatures” glides in with an elastic bassline and smooth-as piano, punctuated with cries that “it’s a love thing”. The track slithers and insinuates over its almost eight minute running time. This is an outsider disco odyssey with Gjedrem’s half-spoken funk-master vocals easing the listener into an uncomfortably comfortable world. About the halfway mark things break down, get a little stranger, as a pulsing bass signals out to the world, before the threads of the track are pulled together. “Flaming Creatures” wouldn’t be out of place alongside AMOR’s recent avant-disco excursions.

Rawer and speedier, “Tidens Ans” foregrounds inventive percussion and gets straight down to the sexed business of the dancefloor. There’s a thrillingly out of time authenticity at play, with elements that would have made rich sample material for an early G-funk number. The invention of a time machine and subsequent meeting between Sex Judas and Warren G awaits. “Faire La Bouef” then travels further off the beaten path, emerging as nothing less than Sex Style era Kool Keith reconfiguring country music for the discotheque.

Sex Judas feat Ricky doesn’t follow the rules across the Flaming Creatures EP, yet these dancefloor workouts bleed irresistible grooves and he imbues everything with an out there disco attitude that is difficult to resist.
