Stewart Gardiner’s recent Sunday afternoon session of outsider sounds, Balearic beats and weirdo anthems at Rough Trade’s Bristol outpost

Concrete Islands might exist somewhere within an imagined Bermuda-like Triangle between London, Glasgow and Bristol, but unlike the other two cities, I’d never DJed in Bristol before. It was therefore great to get the opportunity to change that the other week. I had such a good time that I thought it was worth sharing my setlist here.

Rough Trade Bristol, Sunday 14 August 2022:

Pastels/Tenniscoats – Tokyo Glasgow (Geographic/Domino)

Alex Kassian – Strings of Eden (Garden Mix) (Pinchy & Friends)

Mariah – Shinzo No Tobira (Everland Psych)

Bella Vista – Mr Wong (Isle of Jura)

Stimela – I Love You (Mr Bongo)

Donald Byrd – Dominoes (Blue Note)

Billy Paul – Let the Dollar Circulate (Be With)

Incognito – Out of the Storm (C’s Planet E Special Mix) (Talkin’ Loud)

King Errisson – Space Queen (Mr Bongo)

Hugo Blanco Y Su Arpa Viajera – Infinito (Analog Africa)

Prince Jazzbo – Replay Version (Basic Replay)

Andrew Weatherall – Ghosts Again (Rotters Golf Club)

CS + Kreme – Mount Warning (The Trilogy Tapes)

Pye Corner Audio – The Warmth of the Sun (Sonic Cathedral)

The Golden Filter – New Politik (Anna Wall Remix) (4GN3S)

Psyche – Goodbye Horses (21st Century Immortality Mix) (Optimo Music)

White Eyes – It’s for You (Numero)

Sons and Daughters – Rose Red (Domino)

The Royal We – Wicked Game (Geographic)

A Rough Trade staff member asked about Psyche’s cover version of “Goodbye Horses” when I played it and we had a chat about Q. Lazzarus’s original. I was sad to hear a few days later that she had passed into the night. Rest in power.
